From Dependency to Independence: Anna's Journey

Anna was referred to Michigan Works! through the PATH Program. A single mother of 2 young children (twins), Anna was a homemaker and the sole childcare provider for her children prior to enrolling into PATH. She was faced with significant challenges returning to work including lack of childcare, unstable housing, lack of work attire, and money for gas.

At the start of PATH, Anna had enrolled into a vocational education training, but three quarters the way through her training she made the difficult decision to withdraw and instead shift her focus to finding employment. To help with the transition from an education focus to work focus, Abby, her Michigan Works! Career Advisor, set-up a Work Experience at the local Animal Shelter. This program would help Anna develop her employability skills and ensure she kept positive momentum - not to mention she loves animals.

After a few weeks of her Work Experience, Anna landed a job at a local restaurant. Unfortunately, she was let go just a month later, after her hours were cut due to lack of business. Knowing that when one door closes, another door opens, Anna kept her head up. She applied at the local cell phone store, MiMobile, which holds a special place in her heart, as they were there for her when her phone was damaged and worked with her on repayment.

Michigan Works! was able to help secure an on-the-job training program for Anna at MiMobile and she was able to secure full-time employment. In addition, Michigan Works! assisted with Anna’s job search, job readiness guidance, transitional support services, work experience, resume help, assistance with obtaining affordable and reliable childcare (CDC program), required work attire, and mileage reimbursement to/from work.

The key to overcoming challenges is persistence and willingness to embrace change. Anna has done just that by making steady, continual strides in accomplishing her goals - not only for herself but for her children. Anna's journey is not just a personal victory but also a success for the Michigan Works! programs and staff in Grayling that supported her. Her transition from reliance on public assistance to financial independence is a clear indicator of the positive impact of these initiatives.

MiMobile stated they had been challenged to find the right employee who would represent the company in a professional manner in the role of Sales & Customer Service, but they found the perfect fit with Anna, as she is very outgoing, friendly, and a natural fit in customer service. In her first 6 weeks she received a bonus for outstanding performance and a second bonus after her on-the-job training was completed. She continues to be a valued member of their staff.
