October 17 – In honor of Manufacturing Month, Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium coordinated a Talent Tour for Grayling High School Students. Ten students participated in the tour, which included a virtual and physical tour of the facilities at Weyerhaeuser, a tour of the classes at Kirtland Community College (KCC), and a video detailing the history of Alro Steel.
Students were excited to hear that many jobs at Weyerhaeuser and Alro Steel do not require previous experience to get hired and that they are willing to train new hires. Students were also excited to hear about the Community College Guarantee that could allow them to attend KCC with no tuition costs. During the tours, students learned about the many job opportunities and career pathways that are available right in their local town. The presenters answered the student’s questions, which included info on starting pay, methods of advancement, benefits packages, and workplace safety.
