Michigan Works! Helps Young Homeless Woman Secure New Apartment

Cheyenne came into Michigan Works! seeing if there was any assistance available for securing housing. She was employed but had fallen on hard times. She had been homeless for a few months and was sleeping in her car. As it was getting cold out, and gas prices were getting expensive to live in her car, she knew she had to do something. She found an apartment, but needed help with her first month’s rent.

Michigan Works! was able to help Cheyenne with her first month’s rent and helped her secure the apartment. The landlord worked with her as well, supplying some home furnishings, bedding, cleaning products, and some instant food products.

Working together with the local landlord, the Michigan Works! team helped get Cheyenne into a warm and dry living situation, allowing her to maintain her employment and stay off the street.

Cheyenne said she came in expecting nothing, because her luck is usually the worst, but with an “it can’t hurt to ask” attitude she got the help she needed. She is very thankful for the assistance she received and hopes to go back to college down the road, possibly utilizing Michigan Works! services once again.
