Transferable Experience Pays Off

"My name is Kelly, I went to the Michigan Works! office in Mio about a month ago and I had the pleasure of working with Amanda, a Career Navigator. Initially I went in for help with my resume and a cover letter and Amanda did an amazing job helping me put that together. She also emailed me a cover letter template that I could edit at home. Throughout the last couple of weeks I have come in and she gave me a lead on a position for a Medical Receptionist at a dentist office in Roscommon and ENCOURAGED me to apply, even though I have never worked in a dental environment before (only medical). I took her advice, applied, and got the job!! So needless to say- Thank you Amanda and the Michigan Works! program! - It really works!!"

When Kelly came in to Michigan Works!, she was nervous about creating her resume, so Career Navigator Amanda walked her through it. She also guided Kelly through creating a cover letter that she could tailor to each employer she would be applying to. Kelly participated in a Michigan Works! resume workshop, a cover letter workshop, and received one-on-one job seeking assistance from Amanda. Knowing she wanted to get back into the receptionist field, Amanda encouraged Kelly to apply for a position at a dentist office, even though she was hesitant to apply since she had no prior dental experience. Fortunately, she applied and it paid off, she got the job! Kelly learned that job advertisement preferences aren’t always requirements and to not sell her past experience short.
